4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, June 15, 2012

The story of a gay serial killer, set amid some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, I found this book as compelling as it was disturbing. I found myself thinking about how prejudice warps lives, and complicates the search for authentic life, sometimes moving it into frightening territory. I hoped that Finn would find redemption, much as I hope that I shall, that we all will, and to me, that is part of what makes this book so humanly compelling and provocative.

I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting when I picked this up to read, but I was definitely surprised at how good the writing and storytelling was. I was immediately pulled into the story.

Dont hesitate to read this, it’s an excellent novel. You will find yourself in a strange conflict as you begin to identify with a man you shouldn’t!

I loved this book and I liked the way I was seeing the world in the ‘first person’ through Finn’s eyes. It’s both a sad and exhilarating read. The only minor issue I have is that the pace of the book jumps between fast and slow suddenly and can be disconcerting if I had read several pages at a fast pace and then suddenly the story slows right down almost to a standstill and then just as suddenly picks up again. However that doesn’t detract from a fantastic read, and it can even be argued that this is helping experience the very different mind possessed by a serial killer. Yes, a sequel please.

5.0 out of 5 stars serial killer meets serious libido, 19 Dec 2010

This review is from: The Harvest of Inadequate Lives (Hardcover)

I have just this minute finished The Harvest of Inadequate Lives and stayed in bed all afternoon to finish it. I must admit that I am a serial-killer reader junkie, but this book is one with a serious difference. You can’t help but fall in love with the protagonist. He is the romantic boyfriend we all hope to meet and to possess, the troubled poet who is too good for this flawed world. Oh, Finn, where is your sequel?

If like me you have never read a book of this genre this is a great place to start. I wont go into the story as others have already done it. I was captivated from the start and didn’t want it to end. When it did I found I was shedding a tear. It is thought provoking and insightful and a really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars for me, 22 Oct 2010

The Harvest of Inadequate Lives

For me, a good read is a book that takes you to another world, to another place and you do not want to put down in fear of missing something. This story has it all – and more. Finn draws you into his world, then churns you out again on the very last page Cannot wait for the sequel. Worth every penny, and a book I could read again and again.

An amazing read from start to finish, horrifying, heart wrenching and sad at every corner. At times you might think you are reading a travel book, with the great introduction to the various cities you are plunged into.Hoping a sequel will be on the cards soon.

This book has it all – intrigue, love, sadness. It has an informal style that makes you feel you are sitting with “Finn” as he remembers his life. The reader is gently drawn into his world. A good book that is hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 10 Aug 2010

By

LyndySee all my reviews

This review is from: The Harvest of Inadequate Lives (Hardcover)

A great read

The synopsis of a story about a gay serial killer does not do this book justice – it is much more than that and can be enjoyed on many levels. Whilst the gay aspect and serial killing are a backdrop to the whole novel, it is not overwhelmingly dark or sexually erotic, as may be suggested. It has a great deal more to offer whether gay or not…….a story about the quest and pain of love, a travelogue of cultures and geographies and a clever type of biography written in the first person by the main character, Finn. It is also a fascinating and plausible insight into the world of a gay person. More profoundly, it leaves the reader with a gnawing belief that there are a wealth of people that live a lie and do not acknowledge their own sexuality. Beautifully descriptive throughout and often humourously written, it makes for an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well I never!, 7 July 2010

By

Lynn RattoneSee all my reviews

This review is from: The Harvest of Inadequate Lives (Hardcover)

A compelling read and not just an insight into a gay man’s world but an interesting account of travel and cultures. Humorous in places and darkly twisted in others, it certainly made me think about aspects of life long after I’d finished reading. Would have enjoyed more detail on the execution of some of the crimes, but worryingly I kind of liked the killer! Can’t wait to read what Finn get’s up to next.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRUTALLY HONEST, 30 May 2010

This review is from: The Harvest of Inadequate Lives (Hardcover)

Although the book is about a Gay Serial Killer and has a lot of Gay content, if you are not Gay do not be discouraed by this.. It is a brutally honest account written as if the writer is the killer and is scarily convincing., You are drawn into his world and feel as if you are walking every step of the way with him. One section of the book was incredibly emotional I could feel the gutwrenching pain and helplessness, this part of the book really stays with me. It ends in a way that just screams SEQUEL!! and I hope there will be on and I look forward to reading it. The book is a great read whether you are gay or not. My mother has also read the book, she is 80! and as she said although it was a world totally alien to her it was a really interesting eye opener, interesting and sometimes unusual use of language, the way it was written as the main character was totally believable, and she really enjoyed the book . Just one point, it was in hardback, I was travelling at the time and in hardback meant quite a lot of additional weight to carry in these days of tight restrictions so maybe also a paperback version would be a good idea!! Take the time to read it!! you will be hooked!!

This is on behalf of Sharon ( I ordered the book for her)- so not as some saddo posted – an author being (sarcastically) modest. The book is implicit – anyway Sharon said – “Great – was not sure at first, then realised, I could not put it down, fabulous read.” For more honest face to face reviews, pass by Cabopino – the folk will tell you their truth…………… thank you Sharon x x

This book is a love story that follows the journey of Finn after losing the love of his life. The hook is the Jeckell/Hyde charcter whose colourful life is interwoven with the sometimes covert underground world of the gay scene giving him the opportunities for his killing spree. I could not put the book down and was riveted to the end.

I have just this second finished The Harvest of Inadquate Lives and stayed in bed all afternoon to read it. I came across it quite by accident on Amazon.co.uk and downloaded it. From first page to last, I was there, in the book, and enjoyed it im…mensely. Poor Finn. I fear I’ve fallen in love with a serial killer.
